Aaron's Glory and the Cost of Holiness
1. On the eighth day, Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; 2. and he said to Aaron, “Take a calf from the herd for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without defect, and offer them before Yahweh. 3. You shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both a year old, without defect, for a burnt offering; 4. and a bull and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before Yahweh; and a meal offering mixed with oil: for today Yahweh appears to you.’” 5. They brought what Moses commanded before the Tent of Meeting: and all the congregation came near and stood before Yahweh. 6. Moses said, “This is the thing which Yahweh commanded that you should do: and Yahweh’s glory shall appear to you.” 7. Moses said to Aaron, “Draw near to the altar, and offer your sin offering, and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself, and for the people; and offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as Yahweh commanded.” 8. So Aaron came near to the altar, and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. 9. The sons of Aaron presented the blood to him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar: 10. but the fat, and the kidneys, and the cover from the liver of the sin offering, he burned upon the altar; as Yahweh commanded Moses. 11. The meat and the skin he burned with fire outside the camp. 12. He killed the burnt offering; and Aaron’s sons delivered the blood to him, and he sprinkled it around on the altar. 13. They delivered the burnt offering to him, piece by piece, and the head: and he burned them upon the altar. 14. He washed the innards and the legs, and burned them on the burnt offering on the altar. 15. He presented the people’s offering, and took the goat of the sin offering which was for the people, and killed it, and offered it for sin, like the first. 16. He presented the burnt offering, and offered it according to the ordinance. 17. He presented the meal offering, and filled his hand from there, and burned it upon the altar, besides the burnt offering of the morning. 18. He also killed the bull and the ram, the sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron’s sons delivered to him the blood, which he sprinkled around on the altar, 19. and the fat of the bull and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covers the innards, and the kidneys, and the cover of the liver: 20. and they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burned the fat on the altar: 21. and the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved for a wave offering before Yahweh, as Moses commanded. 22. Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and the peace offerings. 23. Moses and Aaron went into the Tent of Meeting, and came out, and blessed the people: and Yahweh’s glory appeared to all the people. 24. Fire came out from before Yahweh, and consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces. 1. Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and offered strange fire before Yahweh, which he had not commanded them. 2. Fire came out from before Yahweh, and devoured them, and they died before Yahweh. 3. Then Moses said to Aaron, “This is what Yahweh spoke of, saying, ‘I will show myself holy to those who come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.’” Aaron held his peace. 4. Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, “Draw near, carry your brothers from before the sanctuary out of the camp.” 5. So they came near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp, as Moses had said. 6. Moses said to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons, “Don’t let the hair of your heads go loose, and don’t tear your clothes; so that you don’t die, and so that he not be angry with all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which Yahweh has kindled. 7. You shall not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, lest you die; for the anointing oil of Yahweh is on you.” They did according to the word of Moses. 8. Then Yahweh said to Aaron, 9. “You and your sons are not to drink wine or strong drink whenever you go into the Tent of Meeting, or you will die. This shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10. You are to make a distinction between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean. 11. You are to teach the children of Israel all the statutes which Yahweh has spoken to them by Moses.” 12. Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons who were left, “Take the meal offering that remains of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire, and eat it without yeast beside the altar; for it is most holy; 13. and you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion, and your sons’ portion, of the offerings of Yahweh made by fire: for so I am commanded. 14. The waved breast and the heaved thigh you shall eat in a clean place, you, and your sons, and your daughters with you: for they are given as your portion, and your sons’ portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the children of Israel. 15. The heaved thigh and the waved breast they shall bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before Yahweh: and it shall be yours, and your sons’ with you, as a portion forever; as Yahweh has commanded.” 16. Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burned: and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron who were left, saying, 17. “Why haven’t you eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is most holy, and he has given it to you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before Yahweh? 18. Behold, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary: you certainly should have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.” 19. Aaron spoke to Moses, “Behold, today they have offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before Yahweh; and such things as these have happened to me. If I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been pleasing in Yahweh’s sight?” 20. When Moses heard that, it was pleasing in his sight. 1. Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, 2. “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. 3. Whatever parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, and chews the cud among the animals, that you may eat. 4. “‘Nevertheless these you shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those who part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but doesn’t have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you. 5. The cony, because he chews the cud but doesn’t have a parted hoof, he is unclean to you. 6. The hare, because she chews the cud but doesn’t part the hoof, she is unclean to you. 7. The pig, because he has a split hoof, and is cloven-footed, but doesn’t chew the cud, he is unclean to you. 8. Of their meat you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean to you. 9. “‘These you may eat of all that are in the waters: whatever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, that you may eat. 10. All that don’t have fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are an abomination to you, 11. and you shall detest them. You shall not eat of their meat, and you shall detest their carcasses. 12. Whatever has no fins nor scales in the waters, that is an abomination to you. 13. “‘These you shall detest among the birds; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the vulture, and the black vulture, 14. and the red kite, any kind of black kite, 15. any kind of raven, 16. the horned owl, the screech owl, and the gull, any kind of hawk, 17. the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18. the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, 19. the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat. 20. “‘All flying insects that walk on all fours are an abomination to you. 21. Yet you may eat these: of all winged creeping things that go on all fours, which have legs above their feet, with which to hop on the earth. 22. Even of these you may eat: any kind of locust, any kind of katydid, any kind of cricket, and any kind of grasshopper. 23. But all winged creeping things which have four feet, are an abomination to you. 24. “‘By these you will become unclean: whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 25. Whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. 26. “‘Every animal which parts the hoof, and is not cloven-footed, nor chews the cud, is unclean to you. Everyone who touches them shall be unclean. 27. Whatever goes on its paws, among all animals that go on all fours, they are unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 28. He who carries their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. They are unclean to you. 29. “‘These are they which are unclean to you among the creeping things that creep on the earth: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, 30. the gecko, and the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink, and the chameleon. 31. These are they which are unclean to you among all that creep. Whoever touches them when they are dead, shall be unclean until the evening. 32. On whatever any of them falls when they are dead, it shall be unclean; whether it is any vessel of wood, or clothing, or skin, or sack, whatever vessel it is, with which any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it will be clean. 33. Every earthen vessel, into which any of them falls, all that is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it. 34. All food which may be eaten, that on which water comes, shall be unclean; and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean. 35. Everything whereupon part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces: they are unclean, and shall be unclean to you. 36. Nevertheless a spring or a cistern in which water is gathered shall be clean: but that which touches their carcass shall be unclean. 37. If part of their carcass falls on any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38. But if water is put on the seed, and part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you. 39. “‘If any animal, of which you may eat, dies; he who touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 40. He who eats of its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. He also who carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. 41. “‘Every creeping thing that creeps on the earth is an abomination. It shall not be eaten. 42. Whatever goes on its belly, and whatever goes on all fours, or whatever has many feet, even all creeping things that creep on the earth, them you shall not eat; for they are an abomination. 43. You shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creeps. You shall not make yourselves unclean with them, that you should be defiled thereby. 44. For I am Yahweh your God. Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am holy. You shall not defile yourselves with any kind of creeping thing that moves on the earth. 45. For I am Yahweh who brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. 46. “‘This is the law of the animal, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that creeps on the earth, 47. to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.’” 1. Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2. “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If a woman conceives, and bears a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of her monthly period she shall be unclean. 3. In the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised. 4. She shall continue in the blood of purification thirty-three days. She shall not touch any holy thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying are completed. 5. But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her period; and she shall continue in the blood of purification sixty-six days. 6. “‘When the days of her purification are completed, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring to the priest at the door of the Tent of Meeting, a year old lamb for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering: 7. and he shall offer it before Yahweh, and make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the fountain of her blood. “‘This is the law for her who bears, whether a male or a female. 8. If she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves, or two young pigeons; the one for a burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.’”
1. Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that his time had come that he would depart from this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2. During supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, 3. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God, 4. arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist. 5. Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. 6. Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” 7. Jesus answered him, “You don’t know what I am doing now, but you will understand later.” 8. Peter said to him, “You will never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I don’t wash you, you have no part with me.” 9. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!” 10. Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.” 11. For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, “You are not all clean.” 12. So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13. You call me, ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord.’ You say so correctly, for so I am. 14. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. 16. Most certainly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him. 17. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18. I don’t speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen. But that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.’ 19. From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I am he. 20. Most certainly I tell you, he who receives whomever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me.” 21. When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, “Most certainly I tell you that one of you will betray me.” 22. The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke. 23. One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus’ breast. 24. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, “Tell us who it is of whom he speaks.” 25. He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus’ breast, asked him, “Lord, who is it?” 26. Jesus therefore answered, “It is he to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27. After the piece of bread, then Satan entered into him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.” 28. Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him. 29. For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, “Buy what things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30. Therefore having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night. 31. When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man has been glorified, and God has been glorified in him. 32. If God has been glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately. 33. Little children, I will be with you a little while longer. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you can’t come,’ so now I tell you. 34. A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” 36. Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.” 37. Peter said to him, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38. Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for me? Most certainly I tell you, the rooster won’t crow until you have denied me three times. 1. “Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. 2. In my Father’s house are many homes. If it weren’t so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you. 3. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will receive you to myself; that where I am, you may be there also. 4. Where I go, you know, and you know the way.” 5. Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6. Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. 7. If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on, you know him, and have seen him.” 8. Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9. Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you such a long time, and do you not know me, Philip? He who has seen me has seen the Father. How do you say, ‘Show us the Father?’ 10. Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; but the Father who lives in me does his works. 11. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me; or else believe me for the very works’ sake. 12. Most certainly I tell you, he who believes in me, the works that I do, he will do also; and he will do greater works than these, because I am going to my Father. 13. Whatever you will ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14. If you will ask anything in my name, I will do it. 15. If you love me, keep my commandments. 16. I will pray to the Father, and he will give you another Counselor, that he may be with you forever,— 17. the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you. 18. I will not leave you orphans. I will come to you. 19. Yet a little while, and the world will see me no more; but you will see me. Because I live, you will live also. 20. In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21. One who has my commandments, and keeps them, that person is one who loves me. One who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will reveal myself to him.” 22. Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, what has happened that you are about to reveal yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23. Jesus answered him, “If a man loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our home with him. 24. He who doesn’t love me doesn’t keep my words. The word which you hear isn’t mine, but the Father’s who sent me. 25. I have said these things to you, while still living with you. 26. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you. 27. Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful. 28. You heard how I told you, ‘I go away, and I come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I said ‘I am going to my Father;’ for the Father is greater than I. 29. Now I have told you before it happens so that, when it happens, you may believe. 30. I will no more speak much with you, for the prince of the world comes, and he has nothing in me. 31. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father commanded me, even so I do. Arise, let us go from here. 1. “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer. 2. Every branch in me that doesn’t bear fruit, he takes away. Every branch that bears fruit, he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3. You are already pruned clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4. Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. 5. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me, and I in him, the same bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6. If a man doesn’t remain in me, he is thrown out as a branch, and is withered; and they gather them, throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7. If you remain in me, and my words remain in you, you will ask whatever you desire, and it will be done for you. 8. “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be my disciples. 9. Even as the Father has loved me, I also have loved you. Remain in my love. 10. If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and remain in his love. 11. I have spoken these things to you, that my joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be made full. 12. “This is my commandment, that you love one another, even as I have loved you. 13. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14. You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you. 15. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant doesn’t know what his lord does. But I have called you friends, for everything that I heard from my Father, I have made known to you. 16. You didn’t choose me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain; that whatever you will ask of the Father in my name, he may give it to you. 17. “I command these things to you, that you may love one another. 18. If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, since I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21. But all these things will they do to you for my name’s sake, because they don’t know him who sent me. 22. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have had sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23. He who hates me, hates my Father also. 24. If I hadn’t done among them the works which no one else did, they wouldn’t have had sin. But now have they seen and also hated both me and my Father. 25. But this happened so that the word may be fulfilled which was written in their law, ‘They hated me without a cause.’ 26. “When the Counselor has come, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will testify about me. 27. You will also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.
1. Ascribe to Yahweh, you sons of the mighty, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. 2. Ascribe to Yahweh the glory due to his name. Worship Yahweh in holy array. 3. Yahweh’s voice is on the waters. The God of glory thunders, even Yahweh on many waters. 4. Yahweh’s voice is powerful. Yahweh’s voice is full of majesty. 5. Yahweh’s voice breaks the cedars. Yes, Yahweh breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6. He makes them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young, wild ox. 7. Yahweh’s voice strikes with flashes of lightning. 8. Yahweh’s voice shakes the wilderness. Yahweh shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9. Yahweh’s voice makes the deer calve, and strips the forests bare. In his temple everything says, “Glory!” 10. Yahweh sat enthroned at the Flood. Yes, Yahweh sits as King forever. 11. Yahweh will give strength to his people. Yahweh will bless his people with peace.
What to notice today
Today's readings reveal the tension between priestly consecration and personal holiness. In Leviticus, Aaron and his sons are ordained and God's glory fills the tabernacle, yet Nadab and Abihu's presumptuous fire brings death—showing that drawing near to God demands reverent obedience. In John 13–15, Jesus redefines holiness through the new commandment to love one another as he has loved us, establishing that intimate relationship with God flows through sacrificial service to others, not ceremonial perfection.
