Frequently Asked Questions

How did Solomon become king if he was not the oldest son?+
Solomon was not the firstborn son of David, but God chose him to succeed David. David promised Bathsheba that Solomon would be king (1 Kings 1:30), and Solomon was anointed by the priest Zadok and the prophet Nathan. His older brother Adonijah had attempted to claim the throne, but Solomon's supporters were stronger, and he was officially established as king.
What happened to the Temple that Solomon built?+
The Temple Solomon built stood for about 375 years until it was destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar II in 586 BC during the siege of Jerusalem. The Temple was one of the greatest achievements of Solomon's reign and remained the religious center of Jewish worship throughout Israel and Judah's history until its destruction. After the Babylonian exile, a second temple was rebuilt on the same site.
Is the Book of Proverbs written by Solomon?+
While Proverbs is traditionally attributed to Solomon and he is credited with its composition, scholars note that the book may have been compiled over time with contributions from other wise men. Solomon is explicitly named as the author of many of the proverbs in the book (Proverbs 1:1, 10:1, 25:1), and he was famous throughout the ancient world for his wisdom and understanding of natural and human affairs.
