Jonah was swallowed by a whale while fleeing to Nineveh.
Scripture does not specify the creature as a whale. Jonah 1:17 states only that the Lord appointed 'a huge fish' to swallow Jonah; later Jewish and Christian tradition interpreted this as a whale, but the biblical text leaves the exact species unidentified.
