Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Solomon's Temple, the Second Temple, and Herod's Temple?+
Solomon's Temple (First Temple) was built around 960 B.C. and destroyed by Babylon in 586 B.C. The Second Temple was rebuilt by Jewish exiles returning from Babylon around 516 B.C. Herod's Temple (also called Herod the Great's Temple) was Herod's extensive renovation and expansion of the Second Temple beginning around 20 B.C., which is the Temple Jesus would have known. All three refer to the same general structure at different periods of history.
Where was the Temple located in Jerusalem?+
The Temple was built on Mount Moriah (also known as the Temple Mount) in Jerusalem. Today, this location is occupied by the Dome of the Rock, an Islamic shrine built in 691 A.D. The Western Wall, which still stands today, is a retaining wall built by Herod to support the Temple Mount's expansion.
Why is the Ark of the Covenant never mentioned in the Second Temple?+
The fate of the Ark of the Covenant after the Babylonian destruction in 586 B.C. is unknown. Jewish tradition and various historical accounts suggest it may have been hidden by the prophet Jeremiah, destroyed, or carried away by Babylonians. Significantly, the Second Temple built in 516 B.C. is described as lacking the Ark, the Urim and Thummim, and other sacred objects from the First Temple, indicating they were permanently lost.
