Frequently Asked Questions

Why do Catholic and Protestant traditions number the Ten Commandments differently?+
Different Christian traditions group the first two commandments differently. Catholics and Lutherans combine the prohibitions against false gods and graven images into one commandment, then divide the coveting commandment into two (coveting a neighbor's wife separately from their possessions). Most Protestants count them as they appear sequentially in Exodus 20:3-17. Jewish tradition has yet another enumeration. All versions contain the same content; the numbering differs based on theological emphasis and tradition.
Are the Ten Commandments repeated anywhere else in the Bible?+
Yes, the Ten Commandments appear again in Deuteronomy 5:4-21 with some minor variations in wording. For example, the reason given for keeping the Sabbath differs slightly between the two accounts. Both Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5 are considered authoritative statements of God's law.
What happened to the first set of stone tablets after Moses broke them?+
After Moses broke the first tablets in anger upon seeing the golden calf (Exodus 32:19), God provided a second set. Exodus 34:1-4 describes how God gave Moses new tablets with the same commandments written on them. These second tablets were then placed in the Ark of the Covenant.
