Who was John the Baptist and what was his main purpose?+
John the Baptist was a preacher who baptized people in the Jordan River as a sign of repentance. Matthew's Gospel presents him as the forerunner of Jesus Christ, preparing the way for Jesus's ministry by calling people to repentance in preparation for the coming kingdom of heaven (Matthew 3:1-2). Jesus himself affirmed John's greatness, calling him the greatest person born of women (Matthew 11:11).
Why did Herod execute John the Baptist?+
King Herod Antipas had John arrested because John publicly condemned Herod's marriage to Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, saying it was unlawful (Matthew 14:3-4). While Herod feared John and protected him initially, Herodias held a grudge against John. At Herod's birthday celebration, Herodias's daughter danced before him, and when Herod offered her any reward, her mother prompted her to request John's head on a platter (Matthew 14:6-11).
How did John the Baptist identify Jesus?+
When Jesus came to John for baptism, John immediately recognized Jesus's superiority, saying he needed to be baptized by Jesus rather than the other way around (Matthew 3:14). After baptizing Jesus, John witnessed the Holy Spirit descending like a dove and heard the voice of God affirming Jesus as his Son (Matthew 3:16-17). John also testified that Jesus would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire (Matthew 3:11), indicating Jesus's greater power and authority.
