Who were the wise men, and what do we know about them?+
The wise men (also called Magi or Magicians) were scholars from the East who studied the stars. Matthew 2:1 mentions they came from the East to visit Jesus. While tradition names them Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar, the Bible doesn't provide their specific names. They were guided by a star and brought expensive gifts, showing they were wealthy and respected in their society.
Why did the wise men bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh?+
These three gifts had special meaning. Gold represented Jesus as a King (fit for royalty), frankincense was a valuable incense used in worship and represented Jesus' deity, and myrrh was a precious oil used for burial preparations that symbolized Jesus' future suffering and death. Together, the gifts showed the wise men recognized Jesus as King, God, and the future Savior.
How far did the wise men travel to find Jesus?+
The Bible doesn't tell us exactly how far the wise men traveled or how long their journey took. They came 'from the East,' which could mean Persia, Arabia, or other eastern regions—potentially hundreds of miles away. Their journey would have been long, difficult, and taken many weeks or months, showing their dedication to finding the newborn King.
